How to Find the Right Guitar Teacher

Learning music is a wonderful thing. Studies show it can improve the overall quality of life of the student in dramatic ways: from emotional and mental health to academic edge. I believe music is one of God’s greatest gifts to Man. But not all music instructors serve up the same quality instruction. I’ve had several students over the years who have told me horror stories about how their previous instructors discouraged them, called them “stupid”, or yelled at them. It’s unbelievable that such behavior even takes place. (And many of those same students have thrived in my studio. So it…

What They Never Tell You About Guitar Soloing…

Do you know what it takes to create an incredibly melodic, juicy guitar solo? You know, one of those ones that make you stop in your tracks at the mall just to listen through the awe-inspiring moment. And do you know how to create a solo like that in 5 minutes? How about in 30 seconds? How about on the fly? Recently, I did a Facebook Live post on this very topic. One of my Facebook followers, Isaías, had this to say about it: “That was amazing, I’ve been looking for this long time ago (years) and I finally found…

What’s an “interval”?

What’s an “interval”? It’s an awkward word. (Say “awkward word” ten times fast!) Sometimes you mention the word in reference to music and folks’ eyes just glaze over. “What did he say? I have no idea what that means! Now I’m lost!” But actually, it’s simple. According to Wikipedia, an interval is “the difference between two pitches”. A “pitch” is simply a musical note. So, an interval is the difference between two notes. Understanding how to use intervals is vital to great guitar playing and making tasteful solos. It’s also very helpful when creating melodic “hooks”, or catchy melodies, for a song….

How to Cut Your Practice Time in Half (And Get Double the Results)

Recently, I wrote a blog post and recorded a video about the importance of powerful practice routines. But I want to expound on this theme a little more because it’s so critical to experiencing major wins as a guitar player. It’s also extremely important to understand if you are a music instructor of any kind. Getting this skill down will work wonders for your students, especially beginners. I have a brand new guitar student right now. As of this post, we’ve had three one-hour lessons together. When she walked into my teaching studio, she basically was starting from scratch. Now,…

Guitar teachers: Read this!

Just the other day, one of my students told me very respectfully, “I enjoyed taking lessons with my last instructor, but I’ve noticed that what you bring to the table is structure. That structure has helped me to know what to work on at home and helped me progress so much faster. I just want to say thank you.” (This isn’t verbatim but it’s close.) I can relate to what she meant. When I first started teaching guitar, I have to admit that I was not very organized and it was a long and difficult road to become effective in…

What God is looking for in you (and me)

1 Chronicles 11:9 (NET) David’s power steadily grew, for the LORD who commands armies was with him. When God is with you, your power and authority grow. When God is with you (and you are with God), you come to know Him as Jehovah, who commands the armies of heaven! But I would like to point out a subtle and important detail about the scripture above. When God was with David, his power grew steadily. His power was not just a flash in the pan. In fact, his influence arguably carries on into eternity, being that he was a prophet-king,…
